EQUIPMENT: Crude Fired Heater Outlet Piping, Radiant section coils metallurgy is ASTM A335 Grade P9 239psig @ 567F, convection section coils metallurgy is ASTM A335 Grade P9, steam 84psig @ 662F

PROBLEM: The Crude Furnace outlet piping was inspected during shut down. Based on current corrosion / erosion rates a remaining life less than 1 year was anticipated on the 10" outlet elbow. The thinned elbows were to be replaced with new in-kind elbows and weld built-up. In order to facilitate the likely requirement for leak containment in the future, FEA was carried out to establish the thermal-structural stress simulation of the convection coil elbow.

ANALYSIS: Static elastic-structural stress analysis
